STUNNING service set for four (4) chocolate pot with 4 Demitasse cups and 4 saucers. The lid has the cut out for stirring the cocoa. This distinguishing feature differentiates it from a coffee or tea pot. Without the cutout it's not a cocoa pot. Lid has cartouche handle, pot has fancy applied handle. Cups have applied elongated loop handle and the pot has double scroll handle, body of the cocoa pot has six ribs, tapers from the top to the scalloped base. The pattern wraps-around the pot and cups and encompasses the saucer in its entirety. The pot is 10" high, ribbed panel, flares from top to base, there is a 2-tier scallop edge along the bottom and the top has cartouche finial, handle is fancy. It is marked "Made in Japan" on the bottom

 

This magnificent set is made with very fine china similar to Limoges and Meissen in its weight and translucency. When speaking of circa 1890 or earlier items where not required to have a Maker's mark or country of origin, however some artist still marked their crafts. Some “Made in Japan” is WWI Occupied Japan items from the earlier dates.

QUALITY OF PORCELAINS

Green ink marks are 1^st grade

Blue ink marks are 2^nd grade

Red ink marks are 3^rd grade

 

These are universals in ink coloring marks at least in the 1900s before that we assume not.

 

Very fine china similar is light weight and translucency.

 

Limoges, Meissen, Schumann Arzberg, Schlotenhof or Tettau all three used the lion stamp almost exclusively. When speaking of circa 1890 or earlier items where not required to have a Maker's mark or country of origin, however some artist still marked their crafts.

 

       

 

BOVARIAN  CHINA

Bavaria is a region in Europe where many types of porcelain were made. In the nineteenth century (1800s), the mark often included the word Bavaria(alone). After 1871, the words Bavaria, Germany, were used. The Crown with the lion(s) is newer marks, usually after 1900-1910.

 

 

 

ITALY

Italy early pieces broad term used was Majolica Specimen and only the largest pieces of the set were marked.  Italy is one of the earliest pottery makers dating back to the 15^th and 17^th centuries (1400’s – 1600’s).  Some known names are: Majolica Specimen, Renaissance Villanova and Decorative Renaissance.

 

       

 

ROYAL  VIENNA

Arnart Imports Inc. is still in operation specializing in Porcelain gifts and decorative accessories. Not to be confused with the Royal Vienna Beehive trademark our research finds that a mark with the appearance of a bee hive was first used December 1957 by the Japanese company manufacturing wares for Arnart Imports. This mark was cancelled in 2001. The Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Vienna is commonly called "Royal Vienna” by collectors.

Kk Aerarial Porzellan-Manufaktur Wien. The Imperial and Royal Porcelain factory Vienna was founded in 1718. Emperor Karl VI awarded du Paquier a "special privilege" for the exclusive right to produce porcelain in Austria. It was the second hard paste porcelain factory in Europe, after Meissen. Du Paquier (the founder) sold the factory to the Habsburg "court" in 1744. The Austrian royalty owned and operated the factory from 1744 until it closed in 1864. At the time the factory closed, it was put under museum administration.

      After the factory closed, the royal government allowed other factories to open in Austria. One was the Wiener-Neustadt (Vienna-Neustadt), Josef de Cente in Vienna, Austria (1793 to 20th century). This factory bought molds from the Royal factory and made reproductions of the factory's pieces, but its pieces were clearly marked with "de Cente."

       In 1902, Alexandra Porcelain Works Ernst Wahliss in Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia also bought molds from the Royal factory and began making reproductions, which also are clearly marked. Vienna Porcelain Factory Augarten AG was founded in 1922; it is still in operation today. It considers itself the successor to the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory Vienna, because it occupies the original facility. At times, it will use the date 1718 in its marks. However, the marks are distinguishable from the Royal's factory marks.

      Several importers in Europe, New York, and Japan used a bindenschild or beehive mark, as well as the words "Royal Vienna." In addition to Bohemian factories, French, German, Austrian, Japanese, and USA factories and decorating studios used a bindenschild or beehive after 1864. At one time or another there have been dozens of factories and importers using a bindenschild (beehive) or the words Royal Vienna in their marks.

      There are 40 or more, true Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory Vienna marks. It takes a true expert to detect subtle differences in some of the authentic marks from fake marks. It is understood that all authentic Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory, Vienna are marked.  If there is not a mark on the piece, it is not authentic.  Still though, there are some easily distinguishable differences on the fakes. http://collectorscircle.com/

 

Marked: Czech Republic or a variation thereof, means it was manufactured after January 1, 1993, when Czechoslovakia became two separate countries the Ceská Republika (Czech Republic) and Slovák Republika (SlovakRepublic).

 

Marked: Czechoslovakiaor a variation thereof, means it was manufactured after 1920 up to 1993. Czechoslovakia became a country in 1918; therefore, the name/word did not exist until then. Czechoslovakia without a hyphen was rarely used before 1920.

 

Marked: Czecho-Slovakiaor a variation with a hyphen may mean it was manufactured from 1918 to 1938 and 1990 to 1993, though the name was also spelled without a hyphen during these times.

 

Marked: Bohemiaor a variation thereof, does not mean it was made before 1918. The factories often continued to use the name Bohemia after it was incorporated into the new country Czechoslovakia. However, manufacturers should have used the Czecho-Slovakia or Czechoslovakia on the piece as well, if it was made for export to the U.S., because since about 1880 the United States trade laws require a label with the country of origin.

 

Marked: Austria may mean it was made before 1918. Before 1918, Bohemia was in the country of Austria. It could also mean that you have a piece from an Austrian factory.

 

Marked: Germany or Deutschland can mean it was still produced in Czechoslovakia. It may mean it was manufactured during the Nazi occupation 1938-1945. There may be other periods marked this way.
