Condition: Excellent  Looks like new to me and looks like it’s never been used as a planter.

BEAUTIFUL AND VIBRANT unique ashtray and we’ve never seen one like it. It has what we are calling a “ash dispenser” in the middle that twirls/rotates the ashes into the bottom of the ashtray. Ashtray holds 4 cigarettes. Looks as if its never been used. VERY SHEIK AND UNUSUAL

OCCUPIED  JAPAN

Any discussion of Occupied Japan collectibles begins with a look at history. With the surrender of the Japanese on August 11, 1945, the signing of a treaty to finalize the end of the war took place on the battleship Missouri on September 3, 1945. Japan was faced with damaged buildings and factories, so rebuilding was necessary. General Douglas MacArthur stayed behind to oversee this process and re-establish trade. Thus, the American occupation of Japan began, a period that lasted until April 11, 1952.

 

Fifty percent of Occupied Japan glassware and other items had to be marked as such when they entered the United States market. They are rare finds today and are highly valued in the collectibles market. The markings might say either “Made in Occupied Japan” or “Occupied Japan.” You might also see “OJ” or “Japan” used as markings, especially if the glassware is part of a set. Allowing the sale of Japanese handcrafted articles was, in part, a contribution from the United States in helping the Japanese economy recover. This reflected this first time in history that the country of Japan was occupied by a foreign entity. From 1950 to 1952, 90 percent of the products exported from Japan were kitchen and glassware.

 

Many of the pieces that were marked “Made in Occupied Japan” and “Occupied Japan” are highly collectible, since Japan only used these marks for roughly six years. Those marked “Japan” or “Made in Japan” may still have value to other types of collectors but will probably not hold the attraction to “Occupied Japan” collectors because it would be difficult to figure out whether a piece was manufactured before or after World War II.Items that are marked "Occupied Japan" were made from Feb 1947 until April 1952.
