We have seen other Murano pieces large and heavy like this one sell for $100.00 - $500.00.  This item is very UNIQUE, it might even be RARE. DEPRESSION  GLASS 

Depression glassware was popular and affordable. The dime store, where the thrifty homemaker could find everything from toiletries to household goods, proved to be a common source for this inexpensive purchase. Depression glass also made its way into American homes through the issuance of premiums. Sellers or manufacturers would offer a free gift with the purchase of a certain dollar amount of goods or a specific product. It was sometimes packed with breakfast cereals, put into flour sacks, or just given to customers in grocery stores, gasoline stations, or movie theatres.   

    Depression Glass was produced in the USA during the Depression years of the 1920's and 1930's. Generally it was made by machine in a range of colors and a vast amount of it was tableware and kitchenware. Not all pressed glass made in the USA during the Depression years comes into this category.  

    Higher quality pressed glass, usually with ground bottoms and fire polished, was made by companies such as Heisey, Imperial, Fostoria, and Cambridge and sold through jewelry stores and department stores. This glass is normally called "Elegant Glass" and is most commonly found incrystal color.

 

      

 

CAPRICE  CAMBRIDGE

Caprice was made by the Cambridge Glass Company from the late 1930's to the mid 1950's.  It was made in Moonlight Blue, Crystal, La Rosa (pink), amber, amethyst, emerald green and several other Cambridge colors. 

     Although attempts were made to establish a glass factory in Cambridge, Ohio as early as 1873, the business that became the well-known Cambridge Glass Company was not incorporated until 1901. By 1910 the company had purchased another plant in a nearby town and was making etched patterns. The 1920s saw the introduction of colored glassware and full dinner settings. In the 1930s Cambridge introduced popular lines such as Caprice, RosePoint, and Statuesque.

      Business declined in the 1950s due to changing tastes, and in 1954 Orme closed the factory. The company was bought and sold again. Some glass was made until 1958, when production ceased forever. Cambridge glass was high quality, hand-made glass. An early trademark employed the words "New Cut," but the most familiar trademark consists of a "C" enclosed in a triangle. Crown Tuscan had its own trademark. JEANNETTE GLASS CO.

Iris & Herringbone was produced by the Jeannette Glass Company (1898-1983). It was originally made in crystal from 1928 to 1932, though a few pieces were made in pink and green during this period. Some crystal pieces were produced in the 1940's.

  

      

 

 MURANO ITALY ART GLASS

Murano Glass Incin Montreal Canada operated from 1960 to 1962 and was originally Les Industries de Verre et Miroirs Limiteewhich had operated from 1958 to 1960. Chalet Glass was then formed in 1962 or 1963 and the company moved to Cornwall, Ontario where Italian glassblowers manufactured stemware and colored art glass.  This glass is beautiful and extremely heavy because of the lead content. Some Chalet pieces are unmarked or have foil labels and others are sand-blasted or perhaps acid etched with the Chalet signature as shown above.

      Chalet glass is a unique Canadian art glass. Talented artisans such as Sergio Pagnin, Angelo Tedesco and Luigi Tedesco, who worked for Murano, moved to Canada to apply their mastery at the Chalet Artistic Glass Ltd. Company.  They brought a unique style to their pieces; which include features such as flowing designs, curved and outstretched arms, sommerso coloring, and more. These large pieces are very showy so are popular for decorating and they are top quality glassware.  Because of the weight of this glass due to the lead content, always take care when handling the items and never pick them up by the extended "arms".   

    The glass making technique called sommerso began in Italian glass factories in the city of Murano, on an island located near Venice. Murano has long had a history of making Italian glass, beginning in the thirteenth century.  The actual technique involved the following: a glass maker would set a solid color of molten glass against another layer of glass, maintaining an even spread of the liquid glass so it does not fade in areas when another layer of glass is placed upon the part that is colored, sealing the colored layer inside so that one clear layer is on one side, and another clear layer of glass is on the other side. To the eye, it appears that the colored portion is permanently encased, which it is. It is not easy for the glass maker to achieve this effect and only the most talented ones have achieved very modern looking art glass that really stands out when displayed, whether in an individual's home on a shelf or table, or at a museum. The technique was perfected by an Italian glass maker named Carlo Scarpa in Murano in the 1930's. The actual word sommerso means "submerged" as a description of the glass in the way it is made.

 

      

 

PRINCESS  HOUSE

In 1963, Charles Collis saw the need and the opportunity to found a company that would bring affordable, yet classy glassware to an eager market. With Princess House headquarters located in Taunton, Massachusetts. The Princess House glassware is among some of the highest quality in the United States. The original design of the beverage glasses has not changed since 1963.

 

      

 

U.S. GLASS COMPANY

The U.S. Glass Company (1891 – 1910) was actually a consolidation of 17 glass companies.  All were at one time individual companies that joined together to survive.  Each company was designated by a letter and over time it has become all but impossible to tell which of the factories made which patterns.   

      While other factories within the United States Glass Company were forced to close during the Great Depression of the 1930s, Factory R managed to survive. In June 1938, the offices of the United States Glass Company were transferred from Pittsburgh to Tiffin with C. W. Carlson as President. By 1940, all glassware was marked with a Tiffin label; however, the official name of the company remained the United States Glass Company through 1962.
